Patching Where Bitumen Meets Concrete

Kerbs, crossovers, gutters and slab edges

In short

Where bitumen meets concrete — at kerbs, gutters, driveway crossovers and slab edges — the joint is where potholes and cracks start. Patch broken areas with Asphalt in a Bag, which bonds to both surfaces, and seal narrow gaps with Rubberised Crack Filler.

By the Permanent Pothole Solutions team · Updated 26 October 2026

Concrete and asphalt move differently with temperature, so the join opens up and lets water in.

Which product?

  • Gaps up to 9mm: Rubberised Crack Filler
  • Wider gaps: pack with sand or backer rod to within 6mm of the surface, then seal
  • Broken or missing bitumen: 7 Gauge or 10 Gauge, compacted against the concrete

Getting a good bond

Clean the surface of dust, loose material and old filler, then compact firmly so the mix is pressed against the concrete. The co-polymer in Asphalt in a Bag is what lets it adhere to concrete, steel and wood as well as asphalt.

Why Asphalt in a Bag

  • Permanent. Expands and contracts with the road surface, so the patch moves with the pavement instead of breaking away.
  • Cures on impact. Curing is activated by compaction — tamp it or roll it and it sets.
  • Bonds to anything. Adheres to asphalt, concrete, steel and even wood.
  • Any weather. Apply from -26°C to 49°C, in rain, or straight into a pothole full of water.
  • No tack coat. No pre-coating or priming. Open, pour, compact.
  • Traffic-ready. Application is up to five times faster, and it can take traffic immediately.
