Fixing Potholes in Concrete

Patch concrete holes, spalls and joins

In short

Asphalt in a Bag can patch holes and broken areas in concrete driveways, slabs and paths because its co-polymer bonds to concrete as well as asphalt. Clean out the hole, pour, over-fill slightly and compact firmly. The patch will finish dark, not concrete-coloured.

It’s a practical fix where a fast, permanent repair matters more than matching the colour — such as yards, industrial slabs and the joins between concrete and bitumen.

Step by step

  1. Clear the hole. Remove loose stones, dirt and broken asphalt. Standing water can stay — the mix displaces it as it’s compacted.
  2. Build up deep holes. Lay and compact a base course of sand and stone first.
  3. Pour. Tip Asphalt in a Bag straight from the bag and spread it evenly.
  4. Over-fill slightly. Leave the mix a little proud of the surface to allow for compaction.
  5. Compact, crown, compact again. Tamp firmly, shape a slight crown, then compact once more. Open to traffic immediately.

Getting a good bond

Clean the surface of dust, loose material and old filler, then compact firmly so the mix is pressed against the concrete. The co-polymer in Asphalt in a Bag is what lets it adhere to concrete, steel and wood as well as asphalt.

Why Asphalt in a Bag

  • Permanent. Expands and contracts with the road surface, so the patch moves with the pavement instead of breaking away.
  • Cures on impact. Curing is activated by compaction — tamp it or roll it and it sets.
  • Bonds to anything. Adheres to asphalt, concrete, steel and even wood.
  • Any weather. Apply from -26°C to 49°C, in rain, or straight into a pothole full of water.
  • No tack coat. No pre-coating or priming. Open, pour, compact.
  • Traffic-ready. Application is up to five times faster, and it can take traffic immediately.

Questions & answers

Fixing Potholes in Concrete FAQs

Can Asphalt in a Bag be used on concrete?
Yes. It bonds to concrete as well as asphalt, steel and wood.
Will the patch be black on concrete?
Yes. It’s an asphalt mix, so it finishes dark rather than matching the concrete.
How do I seal the gap between bitumen and concrete?
Use Rubberised Crack Filler for gaps up to 9mm. Pack wider gaps with sand or backer rod to within 6mm of the surface first.
